How to paint your wall: A quick paint primer
You want to paint your walls and even though you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you don’t want to do it by trial and error. You want to get it right and get it done! So here’s a crash course in “How to Paint a Wall 101.”
The purpose of this guide is to help you eliminate the learning curve. Painting a wall is not difficult. The effort is in the preparation. Though it may take extra time up front, it will save you from having to clean up your mistakes afterwards, which can cost considerably more of your valuable time. Good preparation also assures you of a clean, professional looking paint job.
To start, you’ll need to choose the color. It sounds simple, but be aware that the lighting and shadows in the store where you select the color are different from those at home. Buy a small sample bottle, paint a large poster board with the color and place it around the room on the walls you want to paint. Looks good? The family likes it? Let’s get started.

Home scenting: Overcoming strong odors
by Amber Benge
You don’t have to spend a lot of time or money to keep your home smelling fresh. Cooking dinner, changing diapers, and keeping a pet indoors can leave your house smelling like yesterday’s trash, but a few quick fixes will reverse the nasty odors and control the everyday smells.
If the smell is coming from your kitchen, start by boiling some vinegar to neutralize the air. Next, make a little box from tin foil and fill it with a few tablespoons of vanilla extract. Turn the oven onto “warm” and carefully place the box inside. Let it continue warming until the sweet vanilla scent fills your kitchen.
When pet odor fills your home, try using baking soda to eliminate the odor. Baking soda can be sprinkled in the bottom of the litter box, to keep your cat’s area smelling fresh. If Rover did his business on your favorite rug, baking soda can help. Mix a few drops of your favorite essential oil with some baking soda sprinkle it over the soiled carpet. Let it stand for fifteen minutes before vacuuming. This should remove the stain and the smell.

Home Repair : Repairing a doorbell
A doorbell that is not functioning can be a nuisance when you miss a delivery or a friend that stops by. Of course it can be helpful in avoiding door-to-door salesmen. In any event, doorbell repairs are fairly simple for most homeowners. By following a few simple steps you should be able to repair the non-working bell. You will only need a set of small screwdrivers, flat and Phillips, depending on the installation, a small bit of sandpaper and a multi-meter if the first two steps do not solve your problem.
Keep in mind that most doorbell units run on about 16 volts from a transformer. Working on the bell or chime unit should not pose any dangers. However, if you need to replace the transformer there will be 120 volts on one end of it.
Push button unit:
The push button unit on the outside of your home is the first item to check. Push buttons malfunctions occur frequently due to corrosion and use. Use a screw driver to remove the cover and check the contacts. The contacts should be shiny. If not, use a small bit of sand paper to clean the corrosion off of the contacts. Push the contacts together with the plastic portion of the bell and listen for the chime. You can also use your fingers if you don’t mind the slight jolt.

Home Tips : How to vent a shed or garage
Venting a shed or garage can be done in many different ways. The types of venting you need should be considered as to your climate and general location. A lot will depend upon weather conditions which prevail in your geographical area though in general the areas to look at are these.
RIDGE CAP VENTILATION:
High humidity areas of the south eastern states use gable and ridge types of ventilation. Houses with metal or galvinized roofs should use the ridge cap vent when installing new roofing.
VENTILATION FANS:
The use of vent fans that can be easily installed and can add to your safety and life of your roof. Installing a apex ribbed vent in the end of the garage or shed can insure the proper air flow and extraction of heat and fumes. An attic or shop installed in your garage or shed will keep the area of the garage or shed cool during those hot summer months and keep the roofing materials from buckling and deteriorating and extracting fumes from the building.
GABLE VENTS:
Central air conditioning: Easy DIY preventive maintenance
ts 6 p.m., a very hot 96 degrees with the humidity at about 80%, and you just got home. Of course, the a/c in your car didn’t quite have time to cool off before you got in the bumper to bumper traffic on the interstate, so you had to turn it off before the auto overheated. That’s OK. At least you remembered to leave your home a/c turned down to about 65 degrees. You’ll cool off once inside and you shed the sweat soaked clothes. Just getting the house key in the hole makes you sweat. Then it hits you right in the face! A blast of hot air that has started your head pounding. No air conditioning!
OK, I know this has happened to at least 75% of the population. Especially if you live in the south, you know what I’m talking about. How can you prevent this from happening again? There are no absolute guarantees it won’t. No, you can’t be completely safe from this aggravating situation. But you can help your heating and cooling system just by reading your owners manual. I know, who reads these things? We do, the ones’ who have been in this same situation. Believe it or not, there are some good facts that you need to know to stay comfortable.
